Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’…. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Luke 1: 34-38
One of the most common and often used words is HOW. When we meet someone we ask “HOW are you”? When someone does not seem to be making much sense we ask: HOW can you talk such nonsense? At an accident scene we say “HOW did it happen? We even say you can travel HOW you want. While peeling pumpkin and the knife sliced my finger my wife asked me: “Galbraith “HOW did you do that”? I went to the doctor and he asked me “HOW did that happen”? HOW!?
Years ago God sent a messenger to inform a disciplined, faithful and obedient young lady that God was pleased with her and that she had been chosen to be the bearer of the Messiah, the Son of God. Guess what she asked? You are correct! “HOW can this be”? HOW? A most appropriate, timely and reasonable question! A question of wonderment rather than one of doubt and skepticism The messenger systematically spelt out HOW God would fulfill God’s promise. Mary was left in no doubt that God had a plan; God can deliver and will deliver. Without hesitation she declared: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word”.
It is not unusual for us to be called upon to do or be what seems impossible. Maybe you, your parents, your co-workers, your friends have been encouraging you to think of great possibilities for your life and you are asking HOW shall this be? A friend had a surgery to do and when the cost was declared the question was “How will I find all of that?” I am reminded of Joe Darion song: “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)". It says:
To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong, To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary, To reach the unreachable star
On one hand we have far more potential in us than we can imagine. Too often we begin by saying “I can’t”. Furthermore, nothing in heaven or on earth or under the earth can prevent God’s will from being realized. For
“Nothing is impossible when you put your trust in God….For ev'rything, O, ev'rything, yes ev'rything is possible with God”.
